Summary. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the October Employment Situation report on Friday 6 November at 8:30 a.m. ET (16:30 EAT). It is the main labour-market reading before the Federal Reserve’s 9 December decision, and it arrives with gold near a two-week high after the midterm-driven dollar sell-off. Forecasts are unusually spread out, so the desk treats this as a high-uncertainty event rather than a directional call.
1. What is expected
- Nonfarm payrolls: about 65,000 (FactSet median of 24 forecasts; range 50,000 to 125,000), against +29,000 in September.
- Unemployment rate: 4.2%, unchanged.
- Average hourly earnings: +0.3% month on month, up from +0.1%.
- Lead indicators disagree: ADP private payrolls rose 86,000 in October, above expectations; Revelio Labs estimates about 26,000. Some desks (Pantheon, Vanguard) forecast 100,000 or more.
2. Why this release carries more weight than usual
- Policy context: the Fed raised rates on 16 September, and markets still price roughly an 80% chance of a December hike (CME FedWatch).
- Revisions: the September report cut July and August by a combined 60,000 jobs. Revisions can matter as much as the headline.
- Positioning into the event: gold reached about $4,146 on 5 November, its highest since 20 October, with the dollar index near a one-month low around 101.40 after the midterm result.
3. How the desk is framing the outcomes
Stronger than expected
A headline well above consensus with firm wages would raise December hike odds. That is typically dollar-supportive and a headwind for gold after its rally.
Broadly in line
The reaction is likely to come from wages, the unemployment rate and revisions rather than the headline number.
Weaker than expected
A miss, a rise in unemployment or further downward revisions would lower hike odds. That is typically supportive for gold and negative for the dollar.
4. Process note
The first minutes after a payrolls release usually bring wider spreads, liquidity sweeps and false breaks. The desk waits for structure to form after the release rather than reacting to the first candle.
The broader gold context is in the XAUUSD Outlook, 4–6 November 2026. A post-release review will follow once the data is out.
